Every “mesh vs extender” article is written for bedrooms and 4K Netflix. Your problem is different: a card terminal that shows half a bar, then hangs at “Authorizing…” while the customer watches, the line grows, and you pretend it’s the processor.
That is not a “slow internet” problem. It is almost always a coverage and client-behavior problem — sticky devices, a second SSID, metal coolers, a microwave in the kitchen path, and a single dead corner that eats one sale at a time.

- Retries and retransmits — the radio is busy recovering packets, not finishing the payment.

So the metric that matters is not “can I stream video.” It is does the terminal complete auth in under a couple of seconds at the worst seat in the house — the back counter, the patio tablet, the kitchen expo screen.
Extender tax: what the $40 box actually costs you
A range extender (repeater) listens to your main router and rebroadcasts. That sounds perfect for “one dead corner.” The tax is usually invisible until you live with it:

- Microwave line-of-sight — 2.4 GHz and kitchens fight; don’t put the only AP on the far side of the oven wall from the terminal.
- Coolers and freezers — treat large metal boxes as walls. Nodes belong around them, not hoping signal tunnels through.
- 2.4 vs 5 GHz for POS — 5 GHz is faster and cleaner when the device is close; 2.4 reaches farther and is noisier. Many terminals live on 2.4 for range. If your mesh lets you, keep both; don’t force a weak 5 GHz association at the back counter.
- Channel chaos — if neighbors are dense, use the vendor app’s auto channel once after hours, then leave it alone unless problems return.
- DFS / 5 GHz surprises — some 5 GHz channels vacate for radar (DFS). Rarely a shop’s main issue, but “it drops every afternoon” is worth a firmware/channel check before you buy more hardware.
- Wired when it counts — receipt printers, network APs, and the primary mesh node love Ethernet. Wireless is for devices that move; fixed gear should not compete for airtime if you can avoid it.
When to stop and run Ethernet to a cheap AP
Stop buying mesh-of-the-month if:
- You already own two extenders and a “booster” and the back counter still fails.
- The building is long and narrow (strip-mall depth) with the ISP jack only at the front.
- You can pull one cable along baseboard, drop ceiling, or conduit to the problem zone.
Then the professional fix is simple: router or mesh primary up front → Ethernet → access point (or mesh node in AP/wired-backhaul mode) at the POS. That is often cheaper over two years than staff time spent rebooting tablets mid-rush.
