HomeView vs Echo Show vs Nest Hub: Which to Buy (2026)

Note: Apple announced HomeView, HomePod mini 2, and a new Apple TV 4K on October 13, 2026, one day before this HomeView vs Echo Show vs Nest Hub comparison was written. HomeView is on preorder and ships November 13; HomePod mini 2 ships October 30. Prices were checked on Amazon, the Google Store, and apple.com on October 14, 2026. No independent reviews of HomeView exist yet; everything below is based on published specs and the retailers’ own listings.

A smart display earns its counter space in one of three ways: it shows you something you’d otherwise pull out a phone for, it controls the house without an app, or it plays music well enough that you stop carrying a speaker around. Most of them do one of those well and the other two badly, and you only find out which after the box is in the recycling.

This week the category got a new, expensive entrant. Apple’s HomeView is a $299, 7-inch screen on a speaker base, with face recognition for up to six people and a rebuilt Siri (Apple). It lands against two incumbents that have been on counters for years: Amazon’s Echo Show, now in its 2025 Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11 versions, and Google’s Nest Hub (2nd gen), which is still $99.99.

So if you’re buying a screen for a kitchen, a front desk, or a back office this fall, the question isn’t which one is “best.” It’s which assistant you already live with, how much of your house it has to run, and whether you need a screen at all. Here’s how to pick, and when each answer is wrong.

Apple HomeView vs Echo Show vs Nest Hub: the short answer

  • iPhone household that wants a shared screen: preorder Apple HomeView at $299, but only if you’re comfortable buying a first-generation product before reviews.
  • Best screen for the money, or an Alexa home: the Echo Show 11 ($249.99) has the biggest, sharpest display here and a full smart home hub built in.
  • Alexa on a smaller budget or a smaller counter: the Echo Show 8 ($199.99) has the same hub and camera with a smaller, lower-resolution screen.
  • Cheapest screen, bedroom, or no camera wanted: the Nest Hub (2nd gen) at $99.99 is the low-cost pick, with Gemini for Home on the way.
  • You don’t actually need a screen: a HomePod mini 2 at $149 is the cheaper way into Apple’s home, and it’s a hub too.

What Apple actually announced

HomeView is a 7-inch Liquid Retina display on a stainless steel hinge, attached to a domed speaker base. It comes in silver, starlight, rose pink, and space gray. A separate wall-mounted model costs the same $299 and comes in space gray and silver (Apple).

The details that matter for a buyer, all from Apple’s press release:

  • Chip: A18, with Secure Exclaves that process camera and microphone data separately from the rest of the system.
  • Screen: 7 inches, True Tone, automatic brightness from 500 nits down to 0.3 nits, and an interface that shows less detail from across the room and more as you get closer.
  • Multiple users: recognizes up to six people by face, each with their own Home Screen. Personal content from Messages and Calendar only shows when the enrolled person is recognized and their paired iPhone or iPad is nearby and recently unlocked.
  • Audio: two full-range drivers in the display, plus a down-firing woofer and two passive radiators in the base. The wall model has two drivers only.
  • Smart home: controls HomeKit and Matter accessories, and the Home Camera face can show up to nine camera feeds at once. It listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and alerts your iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.
  • Calls: FaceTime with Center Stage.

Apple also lists HomeView as a home hub for its new Apple Home Collection cameras, thermostats, and lock, which arrive starting in December, with some in early 2027 (Apple).

Budget for the mount. The wall model needs one of the Schneider Home mounts, so a wall install starts at $358.95 before any electrician. The tabletop version is the better value unless you specifically need it on a wall.

It’s not sold in the EU. Apple says HomeView isn’t available in the European Union because Siri AI isn’t available in iOS there. At launch it’s sold in the US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, the UK, and through resellers in South Africa (Apple).

Read the Siri footnotes. Apple’s footnotes say Siri AI is in beta in HomeView software 27.2, that personal-context requests need a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, and that some server-side features have daily usage limits, with expanded access “available for a fee in the future.” Setup and multiuser support also need a compatible iPhone or iPad. If nobody in the house has an iPhone, this isn’t your device.

Sources for the table: Apple for HomeView; the Amazon listings for the Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 11; the Google Store spec page for the Nest Hub. Apple didn’t publish a resolution or weight for HomeView, so we left those out rather than guess.

Two things stand out. First, the Echo Show 11 has the most screen for the money by a wide margin: nearly 11 inches at Full HD for $50 less than a 7-inch HomeView. Second, the Echo Shows are the only ones here with a Zigbee radio, which matters if your house already runs on cheap Zigbee sensors and bulbs.

Bar chart of US prices checked October 14, 2026: Nest Hub (2nd gen) $99.99, HomePod mini 2 $149, Echo Show 8 $199.99, Echo Show 11 $249.99, Apple HomeView $299 HomeView is the most expensive screen here, and the Nest Hub costs a third as much. Apple HomeView vs Echo Show: who should pick which

This is the comparison most people searching are actually making, because both are camera-equipped smart displays in the $200 to $300 range.

The Echo Show wins on screen and hub. The Echo Show 11 has a 10.95-inch, 1920 x 1200 panel, and Apple hasn’t published HomeView’s resolution, and both Echo Shows have Zigbee, Matter, and a Thread border router built in, so they can pair and control devices that work with Alexa without a separate hub (Amazon). They’re in stock today; HomeView is a month out. (We ran the same Alexa-versus-Apple question for tablets in Alexa Tablet vs Fire Tablet vs iPad, and the trade-offs line up closely.)

HomeView wins on privacy design and the iPhone. Apple’s pitch is a shared screen that becomes personal when it sees your face, with Messages, Calendar, Reminders, and Find My only showing to the right person. Its Secure Exclaves keep camera and microphone processing isolated, and Siri requests run on device or on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (Apple). If your household is all iPhones, that per-person handoff is something no Echo can do.

Watch the Alexa+ terms. Amazon’s listings say the Echo Shows come with free Alexa+ access for a limited time, after which you need Prime or the Alexa+ Standard plan, which Amazon lists at $19.99 a month for non-Prime customers (Amazon). If you’re a Prime member, that’s covered. If not, it’s a real running cost.

Watch the reviews, too. Amazon’s own AI summary of Echo Show 11 customer reviews says buyers like the screen and sound, but that “several report issues with the screen freezing,” and reliability mentions skew negative. That’s not a lab result, but it’s the closest thing to a long-term report any of these devices has, and HomeView has none yet.

Get HomeView if:

  • Everyone who’ll use it has an iPhone, and you want shared photos and personal reminders on the same screen.
  • You already run HomeKit or Matter gear, or you plan to buy Apple’s Home Collection cameras and lock.
  • You care more about where camera and mic data goes than about screen size.

Get an Echo Show instead if:

  • You already use Alexa, Ring, or Zigbee devices, or there’s an Android phone in the house.
  • You want the biggest screen for recipes, cameras, and video.
  • You need it this week, not November 13.

Apple HomeView vs Nest Hub: the $200 question

The Nest Hub (2nd gen) is a different kind of device. It’s a $99.99, 7-inch, 1024 x 600 display with a single full-range speaker, three far-field mics, and a mic-off switch. Google’s spec sheet lists a Soli radar sensor for motion and sleep sensing, an ambient light sensor, and a temperature sensor, and no camera (Google Store). It also works as a Thread border router and a Matter hub for Google Home.

Google is replacing Assistant with Gemini for Home on its speakers and displays, and the Nest Hub (2nd gen) is on the compatible list. Basic features, including smart home control, timers, calendars, and general questions, are free. Google says the advanced Gemini features need a Google Home Premium plan, starting at $10 a month, and the rollout is still in early access by region (Google Home).

Pick the Nest Hub over HomeView if:

  • You want a screen for the bedroom or a front desk and would rather not have a camera pointed at the room.
  • You use Google Home, Android, or Google Calendar.
  • You’re buying several. Three Nest Hubs cost about what one HomeView does.

Pick HomeView over the Nest Hub if: you want real sound from the device itself, FaceTime, and an iPhone-centric home. The Nest Hub’s single 1.7-inch driver isn’t trying to compete with HomeView’s woofer and passive radiators.

For a small shop or home office: the counter angle

A few practical notes for anyone putting one of these on a counter, at a front desk, or in a back office:

  • Face recognition is a feature at home and a question at work. HomeView recognizes enrolled faces to show personal content. In a shop, that’s a camera-equipped device in a customer-facing space. Decide who enrolls before you set it up, and tell staff.
  • The camera matters more than the screen. Both Echo Shows and HomeView have cameras. If the device is going somewhere customers stand, the Nest Hub’s no-camera design is the easy answer.
  • A screen is a camera monitor. HomeView’s Home Camera face shows up to nine feeds at once, and the Echo Shows show camera feeds too. For a small shop with a couple of door cameras, that may be the single most useful thing on this list.
  • Ads and upsells exist. Several Amazon reviewers complain about promoted content on the Echo Show home screen. That’s fine at home and unprofessional at a register.
  • Think about the hub, not just the screen. All four displays can act as a hub for Matter devices. If you’re building a smart office from scratch, pick the ecosystem first and buy the screen to match.

We covered the same “which ecosystem are you buying into” problem for streaming sticks in is the Fire TV Stick 4K still worth it. If you’re nervous about connected screens watching the room, our LG smart TV investigation is worth reading before you mount anything near customers.

Is HomePod mini 2 worth $149?

Apple announced HomePod mini 2 alongside HomeView. It costs $149, comes in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight, and ships October 30 (Apple). MacRumors reports it uses an S10 chip with computational audio, adds a “Sound Glow” top that animates to music using colors from the album art, and can work as a speaker for a Mac (MacRumors).

What it gets you, compared with HomeView:

  • A hub for half the price. HomePod mini 2 works as a home hub, controls accessories by voice, and listens for smoke and CO alarms, the same safety feature HomeView has.
  • Surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K. Four HomePod mini 2 speakers can pair with the new $299 Apple TV 4K for four-speaker surround, with automatic calibration to the room (Apple). Do the math before you get excited: four speakers plus the Apple TV is $895 before tax.
  • Siri AI later, not now. Apple says Siri AI comes to HomePod mini 2 in a future software update, in English in the same countries as HomeView. MacRumors reports it will recognize up to six users by voice once that arrives.

Our answer: yes, if you don’t need a screen. If what you actually want is a kitchen timer, a music speaker, and a hub that keeps your HomeKit gear reachable when you’re away, $149 does that, and you can add a screen later. If you want to see cameras, recipes, or a calendar, $149 is the wrong amount to spend; spend $299 on HomeView, or $99.99 on a Nest Hub if you’re not in Apple’s world.

The weak spot is timing. You’re paying for Siri AI on a device that won’t have it on day one. If the old Siri is what bothered you about your first HomePod mini, wait for the update to ship and get reviewed.

Our take on each smart display

These ratings are for one job: being the shared screen and smart home control point in a kitchen, living room, or small office. They’re based on Apple’s, Amazon’s, and Google’s spec pages, the retail listings, and the reporting cited in this article, weighed against the October 14 price. We haven’t tested these devices ourselves, so treat this as a buyer’s read of the specs, not hands-on results.

Our take: Apple HomeView — 4/5

The most thoughtful shared-screen design here for iPhone households, held back from a 5 by a $299 price, a beta Siri, and no reviews yet.

  • Pro: Recognizes up to six faces and keeps each person’s Messages and Calendar private
  • Pro: A18 chip with Secure Exclaves for camera and mic data
  • Pro: Woofer and two passive radiators in the base, so it doubles as a real speaker
  • Con: Siri AI is in beta, and some features have daily limits with a fee coming later
  • Con: Needs an iPhone or iPad to set up, and isn’t sold in the EU

Price: $299 at apple.com, checked October 14, 2026. Preorder; ships November 13.

Our take: Amazon Echo Show 11 (2025) — 4/5

The most screen for the money and the most complete smart home hub, as long as you’re fine with Alexa+ terms and Amazon’s home-screen promotions.

  • Pro: 10.95-inch, 1920 x 1200 display, the biggest and sharpest here
  • Pro: Zigbee, Matter, and Thread border router built in
  • Pro: 13MP auto-framing camera with a mic and camera disable button
  • Con: Full Alexa+ needs Prime or $19.99 a month after the free period
  • Con: Amazon’s review summary notes multiple reports of the screen freezing

Price: $249.99 on Amazon, checked October 14, 2026.

Our take: Amazon Echo Show 8 (2025) — 3.5/5

The same hub, chip, and camera as the Echo Show 11 in a smaller body, but its 1340 x 800 screen is modest for $199.99.

  • Pro: Same AZ3 Pro chip and Zigbee, Matter, and Thread hub as the Echo Show 11
  • Pro: 8.7-inch screen fits a nightstand or small counter
  • Con: Only $50 less than the much larger, Full HD Echo Show 11
  • Con: Same Alexa+ subscription terms after the free period

Price: $199.99 on Amazon, checked October 14, 2026.

Our take: Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) — 3/5

Still the cheapest decent smart display and the easy no-camera pick, but it’s old hardware with a small, low-resolution screen.

  • Pro: $99.99, a third of HomeView’s price
  • Pro: No camera listed, plus a mic-off switch and Soli sleep sensing
  • Pro: Thread border router and Matter hub for Google Home
  • Con: 7-inch, 1024 x 600 screen and a single small speaker
  • Con: Advanced Gemini features need Google Home Premium, from $10 a month

Price: $99.99 at the Google Store, checked October 14, 2026.

Our take: Apple HomePod mini 2 — 3.5/5

A sensible $149 Apple home hub and speaker, but you’re paying now for a Siri AI update that hasn’t shipped.

  • Pro: Works as a home hub and listens for smoke and CO alarms
  • Pro: Four can pair with the new Apple TV 4K for surround sound
  • Con: Siri AI arrives in a future software update, not at launch
  • Con: No screen, so no camera feeds, recipes, or calendar at a glance

Price: $149 at apple.com, checked October 14, 2026. Preorder; ships October 30.

When none of these is the right answer

  • If your current smart display works, keep it. None of the upgrades here fixes something broken. A newer assistant is a nice-to-have, not a reason to replace working hardware.
  • If you only want music, buy a speaker. A display costs more and sounds no better than a speaker at the same price. The HomePod mini 2 is the Apple option; a screenless Echo or Nest speaker is the cheaper non-Apple one.
  • If it’s for a shared business space, think twice about cameras. A no-camera Nest Hub, or no smart display at all, is the safer default where customers stand.
  • If you need HomeView’s Siri to work on day one, wait. Siri AI on HomeView is labeled beta, and HomeView ships November 13. Reviews will follow.

FAQ

When is the Apple HomeView release date? Preorders opened October 13, 2026, and both the tabletop and wall-mounted models ship November 13, 2026, in the US and the other launch countries (Apple).

How much does Apple HomeView cost? $299 in the US for either model. The wall-mounted version also needs a Schneider Home mount, from $59.95, so a wall install starts at $358.95.

Is Apple HomeView available in the EU? No. Apple says it isn’t selling HomeView in the European Union because Siri AI isn’t available in iOS there. It is sold in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, and through resellers in South Africa.

Does Apple HomeView work without an iPhone? No. Apple’s footnotes say setup and multiuser support require a compatible iPhone or iPad, and personal-context Siri requests need an Apple Intelligence-enabled one.

Echo Show 11 vs Echo Show 8: which should I buy? The Echo Show 11, unless space is tight. For $50 more you get a 10.95-inch Full HD screen instead of an 8.7-inch, 1340 x 800 one, with the same chip, camera, and hub. Either way, full Alexa+ needs Prime or $19.99 a month after the free period.

Is HomePod mini 2 worth it? At $149, yes, if you want an Apple speaker and home hub without a screen. Siri AI arrives in a later software update, not at launch. If you want to see cameras, recipes, or a calendar, put the money toward HomeView or a Nest Hub.
