Mac mini M6 Worth It at $899? M6 vs M4 for Small Business

Mac mini M6: $899 at Apple, $779.99 on Amazon, for 16GB/256GB that cost $599 in 2024. When it's worth it, when a 32GB mini PC wins, and when to buy nothing.

Note: This Mac mini M6 guide was refreshed October 9, 2026. We first published this on August 29, before the M6 shipped. It went on sale September 22, 17 days ago as of this update. Prices were checked October 9 and are moving, so check the live listing before you buy.

Here’s the whole story in one line. In 2024, a Mac mini with 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD cost $599. Today a Mac mini with 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD costs $899 at Apple.

Same memory. Same storage. Fifty percent more money.

The M6 is a real upgrade, on sale since September 22. If you buy the box that holds the backups, the question is whether a $300 jump for the same parts is worth paying. Two things changed the answer since we first ran this: the price history is messier than “$599 to $899,” and Amazon already sells the M6 below Apple’s price.

Mac mini M6 price: $599, then $799, then $899

The increase came in three steps, and the middle one is easy to miss.

In late April, Apple dropped the 256GB Mac mini, making the 16GB/512GB model the $799 entry point (MacRumors). Then on June 25, Apple raised Mac and iPad prices. The 256GB model came back still at $799, and the 512GB model went to $999. Apple told Reuters it had “never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly” (Appleosophy).

That corrects our August framing. Right before the M6 arrived, Apple was selling the identical 16GB/256GB M4 for $799. The direct replacement costs $100 more; the increase over the M4’s $599 launch price is $300, about 50% (iClarified). If you’re replacing a $599 M4, your budget went up $300. If you were about to buy an M4 in August, the M6 costs $100 more for a faster chip.

Bar chart of the base 16GB Mac mini price from $599 at the 2024 M4 launch to $799 in April and June 2026, $899 for the M6 in September 2026, and $779.99 on Amazon on October 9, 2026 Three Apple price steps in under two years, then a discount at Amazon. Chart: Ctrl Alt Orion, from Apple, MacRumors, Appleosophy, iClarified and Amazon data.

The Amazon wrinkle. On October 9, Amazon had the M6 Mac mini (16GB/256GB, 12-core CPU and GPU) at $779.99, sold and shipped by Amazon.com. That’s $20 under Apple’s $799 education price and under what the M4 cost in August. Mac mini M6 16GB/256GB on Amazon: $779.99 when checked

Performance claims. Apple claims up to 40% faster CPU, 4x faster AI, and 2x faster graphics and storage, but its footnote compares against an M4 with 32GB and a 2TB SSD, not the base model (Apple). In Apple’s app tests, per iClarified, the M6 was up to 4.8x faster at LLM prompt processing in LM Studio and 1.5x faster in Excel. Those are specific tests, not a general speedup.

Two details that matter in a back office:

  • The base 16GB M6 gets 153GB/s, not the headline 170GB/s, which needs 24GB or 32GB. Irrelevant for file serving; relevant for local AI.
  • 2.5Gb Ethernet is standard. For a box serving files over a 2.5GbE switch, that’s a real upgrade over the M4’s gigabit port.

What didn’t change: a 32GB and 2TB ceiling, neither upgradeable after purchase. If you own an M4 for back-office work, don’t upgrade.

”Just buy a refurb M4” doesn’t work anymore

In August we called a refurbished M4 the value pick. That’s no longer true. Apple’s lineup is now M6 and M5 Pro, and Apple’s US refurbished store listed no M4 Mac minis when we checked. The only 16GB/256GB M4 we found on Amazon was a Renewed unit at $893 from a third-party seller (Gadget Replay), $113 more than a new M6 from Amazon.com.

If you find a 16GB M4 well under $700 from a seller you trust, it’s still a fine back-office machine. Just don’t pay M6 money for it, and never buy 8GB.

Why the price went up: memory, and it isn’t over

The base model’s memory and storage didn’t change. Their cost did. Memory makers keep shifting capacity to server DRAM and HBM for AI, leaving less for PCs. Our August version cited forecasts that ran through Q3. TrendForce’s September 30 outlook for Q4 2026 still points up:

  • Conventional DRAM contract prices up 10–15% quarter over quarter, slower but still rising.
  • NAND flash contract prices up 15–20%.
  • PC makers are still buying aggressively because they expect DRAM supply to stay tight in 2027, and TrendForce says PC DRAM supply could fall in 2027 as more capacity moves to servers.
  • PC brands are cutting SSD capacities in mainstream models to lower costs (TrendForce).

The longer breakdown is in the memory pricing piece. For a buyer, the point is simple: waiting for cheaper RAM is a bet against every current forecast.

Is the Mac mini M6 worth it? The four real options

In a 3–10 person shop, the box under the counter holds the file share, runs backups, drives a queue screen, and runs the one accounting package that isn’t a web app. File serving and backup depend on storage and the network. Local models depend on memory. The M6’s faster cores help least where a back office needs the most.

1. The M6, if you’re Mac-locked

If your POS, design tools, or one indispensable app is macOS-only, the decision is made. Buy the base M6 where it’s cheapest. 16GB is fine for files, backups, a display, and office apps. 256GB is small, so put archives on an external Thunderbolt drive instead of paying Apple’s storage prices. The $1,699 M5 Pro is for a named need: 64GB, Thunderbolt 5, or 307GB/s of bandwidth.

2. An x86 mini PC, the price-per-gigabyte pick

A Windows or Linux mini PC still gives you more memory and storage per dollar, and you can usually upgrade both later. On October 9, Amazon search turned up 32GB/1TB mini PCs on older Ryzen chips from about $569 (the BOSGAME P5 Pro, a Ryzen 7 6800H). The Minisforum UM870 Slim, with the same chip class as the Beelink SER8, was $799. Our pick, the Beelink SER8 32GB/1TB, was $859: twice the M6’s memory and four times its storage for $80 more than Amazon’s M6 price. Its listing says the DDR5 can go to 256GB.

We compare them one by one in our Mac mini alternatives roundup.

3. A big-memory box, only if local AI is the job

Big-memory mini PCs took the hardest hit. The 128GB GMKtec EVO-X2 sold for $1,800 to $2,000 in June (ComputingForGeeks); on October 9 it was $3,649.99 on Amazon. Buy it only for a named local-model workload. It’s not a file server.

4. Buy nothing, the pick most shops should make

Your existing box is probably fine, and the money should go to storage and power. Back-office machines run out of space before speed. If yours crawls because its drive is 94% full, a bigger NVMe drive or more RAM fixes it for a fraction of a new machine. Spend the difference on what actually loses you money: a real backup that isn’t a USB drive someone remembers to plug in, and a UPS so a power cut doesn’t corrupt it mid-write.

Our take on each pick

We haven’t tested these ourselves; ratings weigh specs, listings, and the reporting cited here against the October 9 price, for small-shop back-office use.

Our take: Mac mini M6 (16GB / 256GB) — 4/5

The right machine if you’re Mac-locked, and at Amazon’s price it’s cheaper than a used M4. It’s capped at 4 because you can never upgrade the memory or storage.

  • Pro: 12-core CPU and GPU, and 2.5Gb Ethernet as standard
  • Pro: $779.99 at Amazon, $119 under Apple’s $899 and $113 under a Renewed M4
  • Pro: Same five-inch chassis and port layout as the M4
  • Con: 256GB fills fast, and memory and storage are fixed at purchase
  • Con: The 16GB model runs at 153GB/s, not the 170GB/s Apple advertises for 24GB and 32GB

Price: $779.99 on Amazon (sold and shipped by Amazon.com), checked October 9, 2026. Apple’s price is $899.

Our take: Beelink SER8 (32GB / 1TB) — 4.5/5

The best value if you don’t need macOS: double the M6’s memory, four times its storage, and room to grow, for $80 more than Amazon’s M6 price.

  • Pro: Ryzen 7 8745HS, 32GB DDR5 (listed as upgradeable to 256GB), 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD
  • Pro: 2.5Gb Ethernet, USB4, three displays, and a three-year warranty, per the listing
  • Pro: The 16GB/500GB version was $619 if 16GB is enough
  • Con: Wi-Fi 6 only, and older-chip 32GB/1TB boxes cost about $290 less

Price: $859 on Amazon (sold by Beelink Direct, ships from Amazon), checked October 9, 2026. The 16GB/500GB model was $619, with one left in stock.

Our take: GMKtec EVO-X2 (128GB / 2TB) — 4/5

A great local-AI box that a Mac mini can’t match, but overkill for back-office work, and now nearly double its June price.

  • Pro: About 96GB of the 128GB pool can go to the GPU on Linux, three times the M6’s ceiling
  • Pro: Sold by GMKtec’s own storefront at the same price as GMKtec’s site, per ComputingForGeeks
  • Con: $3,649.99, up from $1,800–$2,000 in June, with soldered memory
  • Con: One 2.5GbE port, and fans audible across a room under load

Price: $3,649.99 on Amazon, checked October 9, 2026.

Our take: APC BE600M1 UPS — 4/5

Cheap insurance for whatever box holds your files. It’s sized for clean shutdowns, not riding out long outages.

  • Pro: 23 minutes of runtime at a 100W load, per the listing
  • Pro: Five battery-backed outlets plus two surge-only outlets, and a user-replaceable battery
  • Con: Not enough for a server closet; you’ll need a bigger unit for that

Price: $83.99 on Amazon, checked October 9, 2026.

The upgrade trap: on a Mac mini, memory and storage are decided once, at checkout, at Apple’s rates. On an x86 mini PC you can add memory later, when you choose. That’s also the best argument for buying the smallest Mac that does the job instead of “future-proofing” at Apple’s prices.

If local AI is part of the plan

For product descriptions, email drafts, and file triage on your own hardware, memory is the spec. A dense 32B model at 4-bit takes about 20GB, per ComputingForGeeks. So:

  • 16GB M6: skip it for local AI. A 32B model won’t fit, and the base model’s bandwidth is lower.
  • 32GB M6: fits a 32B-class model with little room left over
  • 64GB M5 Pro ($1,699 and up): room for a bigger model or a second workload
  • 128GB Strix Halo box: for 70B-class and large mixture-of-experts models

More in the always-on local agent piece.

What to skip

  • The 10Gb Ethernet upgrade, unless you move video files all day. 2.5Gb is standard now.
  • Apple storage upgrades. An external Thunderbolt drive outlives the computer.
  • A used M4 priced like a new M6. $893 Renewed against $779.99 new doesn’t work.
  • Waiting for memory prices to fall. The Q4 forecast is still up.
  • Buying without a UPS. The APC BE600M1 is $83.99 and it’s the cheapest insurance in the building.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mac mini M6 worth it at $899?

If you’re Mac-locked, yes, but Amazon had it at $779.99 on October 9. If you’re not, an x86 mini PC gives you more memory and storage you can upgrade later.

Mac mini M6 vs M4: should I upgrade?

Not from an M4 for back-office work. The M6 adds two CPU and two GPU cores, more bandwidth, 2.5Gb Ethernet, and Wi-Fi 7, with the same 32GB ceiling and case. Upgrade from an Intel or M1 Mac mini instead.

When did the M6 Mac mini come out?

Apple announced it on August 25, 2026, and it went on sale September 22, 2026. Pre-orders are over; it’s in stock at Apple, Apple Authorized Resellers, and Amazon.

Was the base Mac mini really $599?

Yes. The M4 Mac mini launched in 2024 at $599 for 16GB/256GB. Apple dropped that model in late April 2026, then brought it back at $799 on June 25. The M6 replaced it at $899.

Will memory prices come back down?

Not on current forecasts. TrendForce projects conventional DRAM contract prices up 10–15% and NAND up 15–20% in Q4 2026, and PC makers expect tight DRAM supply in 2027.

What is the Mac mini M6 price?

$899 at Apple for 16GB/256GB, or $799 with Apple’s education pricing. On October 9, Amazon had the same model at $779.99, sold and shipped by Amazon.com. The M5 Pro model starts at $1,699.

Should I buy a refurbished M4 Mac mini instead?

Not at current prices. Apple’s US refurbished store listed no M4 Mac minis when we checked, and the only 16GB/256GB M4 we found on Amazon was a Renewed unit at $893 from a third-party seller, $113 more than a new M6 from Amazon.com.

What’s the best Mac mini M6 alternative for a small business?

If you don’t need macOS, our pick is the Beelink SER8 32GB/1TB at $859 on October 9: twice the M6’s memory and four times its storage, and you can upgrade both later. The 16GB/500GB version was $619.

Is the 16GB Mac mini M6 enough for local AI?

No. A dense 32B model at 4-bit takes about 20GB, and the base model’s memory bandwidth is 153GB/s, not 170GB/s. A 32GB M6 fits a 32B-class model with little room left over.

The bottom line

The Mac mini didn’t get $300 better. It got $300 more expensive than in 2024, and $100 more than the M4 Apple sold in August, because memory and storage are in a price shock that hasn’t ended.

If you’re Mac-locked, buy the base M6 at the lowest price you can find (Amazon’s $779.99 beats a used M4) and keep archives on an external drive. If you’re not, the x86 mini PC wins this year, mostly because you can add memory to it later. And if your current box still boots and has free space, buy a bigger drive, a UPS, and a backup that actually runs.

One last thing: the box is rarely the problem. The problem is that your register, storefront, inventory, and books don’t agree, and a faster machine only makes reconciling them by hand at 11pm slightly less painful. That part we build.
